How to Balance Your Chakras (Energy Centers)

Simple Practices Inspired by Yoga & Ayurveda

If yoga offers a map of our inner landscape, Ayurveda offers practical ways to care for it. Originating in India thousands of years ago, Ayurveda is a traditional system of well-being that encourages balance through everyday choices: how we eat, move, breathe, rest, and connect with nature. While the chakra system and Ayurveda are distinct traditions, they complement one another beautifully.

[New to Ayurveda?  If you’re curious to learn more about the tradition behind some of the practices shared here, you may enjoy reading, The Rise of Ayurveda in the West, where we explore the five elements, the doshas, and the timeless principles that have guided this system for thousands of years.]

You don’t need to overhaul your life to feel the difference. Start with one simple practice rather than trying to change everything at once, and let it teach you what the next one should be.

In yogic tradition, balancing the chakras isn’t necessarily about trying to make something dramatic happen. It’s about bringing greater awareness and harmony to the physical, emotional, and energetic qualities associated with each center. Balance doesn’t always mean “opening” a chakra more; sometimes it may involve bringing greater awareness to qualities that feel underexpressed or overexpressed. And because the chakras are traditionally understood as an interconnected system, supporting one area may influence others too. Practices such as movement, breathwork, meditation, mantra, and mindful daily habits offer different ways of working with that inner landscape.

Supporting the Chakras (Energy Centers) Through Yoga & Ayurveda

ROOT CHAKRA (Muladhara)

Ayurveda teaches that feeling grounded begins with creating stability in your daily life. Warm, nourishing meals, restful sleep, time in nature, and simple routines all help cultivate a stronger foundation for both body and mind.

When life feels overwhelming, Ayurveda encourages slowing down rather than doing more. Consistency often becomes one of the greatest forms of healing.

NOURISH: Warm, cooked meals · regular meal and sleep times · warming teas · time in nature

MOVE: [Above featured Root Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Slow, deep belly breathing

MANTRA: LAM

RETURN: Where in my life could I create a little more stability, safety, or consistency?

SACRAL CHAKRA (Svadhisthana)

Ayurveda reminds us that health isn’t only about discipline—it also includes joy, creativity, healthy relationships, and learning to move with life’s natural rhythms. Gentle movement, hydration, and making space for pleasure and rest can all support emotional well-being.

NOURISH: Stay well hydrated · enjoy naturally sweet fruits · slow down and enjoy your meals

MOVE: [Above featured Sacral Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Slow, flowing breaths into the lower belly

MANTRA: VAM

RETURN: What brings me genuine joy, and have I been making time for it?

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA (Manipura)

Ayurveda places great importance on healthy digestion—not only of food, but also of thoughts and experiences. Supporting digestion with regular meals, mindful eating, and warming spices can help us feel energized, focused, and resilient.

NOURISH: Regular meals · your largest meal around midday · warming digestive spices like cumin, coriander, fennel, turmeric, or ginger

MOVE: [Above featured Solar Plexus Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Deep, steady breaths into the belly

MANTRA: RAM

RETURN: Where in my life can I trust myself a little more?

HEART CHAKRA (Anahata)

Ayurveda recognizes that emotional well-being and physical health are deeply connected. Practices that cultivate gratitude, compassion, forgiveness, and meaningful connection can support a more balanced heart.

NOURISH: Fresh leafy greens and herbs · time in nature · meaningful connection · gratitude

MOVE: [Above featured Heart Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Slow, gentle breaths into the chest

MANTRA: YAM

RETURN: What would it look like to offer myself the same compassion I give to others?

THROAT CHAKRA (Vishuddha)

Ayurveda encourages speaking truthfully, listening with presence, and communicating with kindness. Caring for the throat through hydration, rest, and mindful speech can support clearer expression.

NOURISH: Warm herbal tea · plenty of water · mindful speech · moments of silence

MOVE: [Above featured Throat Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Slow breaths followed by gentle humming

MANTRA: HAM

RETURN: Is there something I’ve been needing to express honestly and kindly?

THIRD EYE CHAKRA (Ajna)

Ayurveda values clarity that comes from awareness rather than constant stimulation. Quiet moments, restorative sleep, meditation, and spending less time consuming information can help create space for greater insight.

NOURISH: Restful sleep · less screen time · quiet time in nature · space away from constant stimulation

MOVE: [Above featured Third Eye Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Slow, even breaths with your attention turned inward

MANTRA: OM

RETURN: What is my intuition gently trying to show me right now?

CROWN CHAKRA (Sahasrara)

Ayurveda encourages remembering that true well-being includes caring for the body, mind, and spirit together. Moments of stillness, gratitude, contemplation, and connection with something greater than ourselves can bring a deeper sense of peace.

NOURISH: Stillness · meditation · gratitude · prayer or personal reflection · wisdom-based reading

MOVE: [Your featured Crown Chakra pose]

BREATHE: Natural, effortless breathing in stillness

MANTRA: OM / AUM

RETURN: What helps me feel most connected to something greater than myself?

Choose one practice this week rather than trying to balance every chakra at once. Small, consistent steps are often the most transformative.

Returning to balance, one mindful practice at a time. 🌱
