The Life You Inherited And the One You Get to Choose
The patterns we inherit are often the hardest to see — because they feel like home. 💛
Here’s a question I never thought to ask myself until my early thirties: Who decided this was the life I wanted?
I was going through the motions of a life that looked perfectly fine from the outside and yet something felt slightly off, like wearing shoes that almost fit.
The truth is many of our deepest patterns weren’t chosen. They were inherited. Absorbed. Passed down through family dynamics, cultural expectations, and unspoken rules that nobody ever wrote down, but everyone somehow knew.
The Awakening
For much of my life, I was genuinely good at keeping the peace. Adjusting. Accommodating. Smiling through things that quietly wore me down. And here’s the sneaky part, it can look a lot like strength, especially for women. She’s so patient. So selfless. So dependable.
“Somewhere along the way, I’d become so fluent in listening to everyone else that I’d completely stopped listening to myself.”
Many of us are raised subtly, lovingly, sometimes not so lovingly to prioritize harmony over being real. To stay quiet rather than question. To carry responsibilities without ever stopping to ask: Is this actually mine to carry?
And we do it, not because we’re weak, but because that’s what we were shown. Because it kept things calm. Because it felt like love.
The Turning Point
It was a conversation where I said what I actually thought instead of what was easiest. It was a boundary I set that wasn’t so easy, but that I held anyway. It was choosing, for the first time, to trust the small voice inside me that I’d spent years talking over.
Looking back, those small moments changed everything.
The Both/And
Here’s the thing about choosing a different path: it doesn’t mean abandoning where you came from. It’s not rejection — it’s expansion.
You can honor your roots and grow beyond them. You can love your family and gently release what no longer serves you. You can carry gratitude for your past and still decide to build something new.
That balance isn’t easy. But it’s where the real growth lives.
We often spend years looking at the world through windows that were handed to us, never realizing we’re allowed to open a different one.
And perhaps the most generous thing we can do for the people who come after us is simply this: live a little more honestly and with more love than we were taught to.
Because vulnerability isn’t weakness — it’s medicine. Not just for ourselves, but for the entire world. Every time one of us chooses to follow our heart over everyone else’s opinion of it, we give someone else silent permission to do the same. That ripple goes further than we’ll ever know.
One ripple at a time. 💛
REFLECTION
Wherever you are right now, I invite you to ask yourself:
“What would you allow yourself to feel if you knew that feeling it was an act of courage — not weakness?”
